HIS runs a structured trainee education programme specifically for medical microbiology, medical virology and infectious diseases trainees which is aligned to the infection curricula.
The programme comprises a series of three, independent, one-day training sessions per year (in February, July and November), over a three-year period. This day on 'Reducing harm to patients and improving quality of care' is one of the 9 trainee education days in the programme. HIS members who attend 7 (distinct) of the 9 Trainee Education Days in the rolling programme and complete the HIS/UKHSA Foundation Course in Infection Prevention and Control are eligible to apply for the Foundation Certificate in IPC.
