Special issue information:

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant threat to global health, rendering antimicrobials less effective against infection and leading to increased mortality, prolonged illnesses, and higher healthcare costs. Evidence shows that most of the cases of infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria are associated with healthcare. Without effective interventions, AMR undermines our ability to treat common infections and safely perform routine medical procedures, jeopardizing advancements in healthcare. The spread and impact of AMR and healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) is affect millions of patients worldwide, in both high- and low/middle-income countries.

Effective integrated infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) strategies are fundamental in the fight to control the spread of AMR.

The Journal of Hospital Infection (JHI) is calling for original research, reviews and opinion, with a focus on the impact of integrated AMS and IPC interventions on AMR and HCAIs, and on AMR and HCAI surveillance.

Working with Guest Editor Dr Benedetta Allegranzi, of the World Health Organization (WHO) the JHI seeks to present this research to an international readership in a Special Edition dedicated to the topic, to be published in November 2024.

The JHI particularly seeks work addressing the following aspects from across the world:

  • Surveillance
    • Multicentre/Large analysis of AMR epidemiology and HCAI
    • Novel strategies for AMR surveillance
  • Risk factors for AMR spread/rise in healthcare settings
    • Multicentre/Large analysis of AMR and HCAIs risk factors within healthcare settings
  • Prevention and control of AMR and HCAIs
    • Analysis of the impact of AMS programmes on AMR
    • Multicentre/Large analysis of IPC interventions and improvement programmes
    • Analysis of the effectiveness of IPC strategies for the control of AMR and/or HCAIs
    • Integration of AMS and IPC strategies for the control of AMR
    • Novel strategies for AMR control
  • Economic Analyses
    • Multicentre analysis of the costs of AMR
    • Cost effectiveness of AMS programmes
    • Cost effectiveness of IPC programmes

Manuscript submission information:

Please submit your paper to Journal of Hospital Infection via Editorial Manager®.To submit your manuscript to the special issue, please select the Article Type VSI: WHO Issue: IPC and AMS.

Deadline for submissions: 30 September 2024.

If you have any related research that does not fall within any of these categories we might still be interested in publishing it; we would encourage you to contact the Editorial Office (journals@his.org.uk) to discuss any research or ideas that you have.

The JHI is the editorially independent scientific publication of the Healthcare Infection Society (HIS). The aim of the Journal is to publish high-quality research and information relating to infection prevention and control that is relevant to an international audience.

The JHI’s instructions for authors are available on the journal website (Guide for Authors), and authors are kindly asked to follow them. When you come to submit your article, please note that you are responding to this call for papers in your cover letter to ensure your work is held for the special edition.
