Programme

This course was originally run as a pilot for members of HIS Committees in December 2022.  Following positive feedback from participants, we are now running a half a day virtual workshop on 3 October from 13:00-16:00

Content:

  • How the media works
  • Handling challenging issues and tough questions
  • Preparing for and handling media interviews
  • Practice interviews

Topics covered will include:

  • Tackling challenging, on-the-spot questions (where there may be no clear answer)
  • How to get your point across in a concise way
  • How to challenge inaccuracies in an appropriate manner

Scenarios covered will include:

  • A large outbreak with in patient- mortality or rapid transmission causing bloodstream infections/ITU admission
  • Healthcare associated infections from the built environment such as Pseudomonas in infants

Pre-workshop preparation:

Prior to the course, registered attendees are required to answer the following three questions related to dealing with the media to enable Mark Brealey to tailor the course.

  1. Describe a media-specific question you'd like answered during the workshop
  2. What scenario would you worry about (if you had to deal with the media)?
  3. What is your media experience to date?

The workshop will be a challenging, fun and useful afternoon. It will be a safe space, with IPC peers, where nobody should feel self-conscious about making mistakes.

Mark will describe the tools of the trade, the tips for success – and then give participants the chance to put them into practice with realistic press, radio and TV interviews. Interviews will be played back, allowing group feedback and then participants have the chance to do it all again to put the learning into action immediately.

After the course each attendee will receive:

  • Handout e-booklet
  • Top tips
  • Copy of radio/TV interviews
  • 12 months free phone-based support (including interview dry-runs)
  • Training certificate
