Aligning the HIS committee structure to deliver the 2020-2025 strategy

To ensure that we have the best possible chance of achieving our five strategic objectives, in June 2019 HIS Council reviewed the current committee structure to ensure the remit and membership representation of the current committees was aligned to the new strategy. The current governance structure was also considered in light of recommendations made to the Society by the NCVO in March 2019, when viewed within the framework of the Governance Code.  Recommendations included reducing the size of HIS Council, which has historically included additional co-opted members (who are not trustees), the presence of whom can complicate the governance of decision making.

After consideration, HIS Council have approved the formation of a new committee structure, which will come into being following the 2019 AGM, which will take place on 12 November at FIS 2019 in Edinburgh.

The new HIS committee structure

Key changes:

  • Committee membership will always include at least one trustee who will report to Council. In most cases, this will remove the need for the Chair to sit on Council as a co-opted member
  • Co-opted members on Council will be avoided where possible

New committees:
Professional Development Committee
Research Committee
Guidelines Committee

Committees that will remain, but whose composition will change:
Trainee Committee
Executive Editorial Board

Dissolved committees:
Education Committee (will fall under the remit of the Professional Development Committee)
DIPC Committee (will fall under the remit of the Professional Development Committee)
Scientific Development Committee (will fall under the remit of the Research Committee)
Grants Committee (will fall under the remit of the Research Committee)
