Reclaiming your tax

The Healthcare Infection Society is an HMRC approved (List 3) professional body. If you are a UK taxpayer, the fee you pay for your membership may be tax-deductible (eligible for tax relief).

Membership categories, criteria and benefits

Full membership

Open to:

 Medically qualified microbiologists and infectious disease physicians; or

 Microbiologists, with qualifications of PhD or FRCPath, working in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infection; or

 Other graduates (for example, infection prevention and control practitioners, antimicrobial pharmacists or clinical scientists) who have demonstrated a consistent and continuing interest in hospital and other healthcare-associated infection, by relevant publication, or by other means.

 Others working in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infection who have a significant level of experience.

Associate membership

Open to:

 Anyone working in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infections who does not fulfil the criteria for Full or Trainee membership, who demonstrates commitment to infection, prevention and control, and who has an interest in/working in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infection.

 Following 5 years of continuous membership as an Associate member, and having demonstrated significant and ongoing experience in infection prevention and control, Associate members may transfer to Full membership.

Trainee membership

Open to:

 UK and Republic of Ireland trainees for the duration of their training. Trainees are Doctors on a recognised programme of specialty training in the field of microbiology, virology, infectious diseases or undertaking dual training in these disciplines who has not yet been appointed to a consultant or academic equivalent position (with an academic equivalent position being that of senior lecturer, reader or professor).

Experienced clinical scientists registered on a Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) programme to become a consultant clinical scientist who are not already eligible for Full membership via another route (note that if you are an STP you should join as an Associate member); or 

Those in internal medical training stage 1 or core medical training who demonstrate a suitable commitment to infection prevention and control, and who have an interest in/working in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infection should apply for Associate trainee membership.

A Trainee member will receive free membership, and will, for the purposes of HIS, be considered a Full member. At the end of their training the trainee will become a Full member and within six months of receiving their certificate of completion, be required to pay the full annual fee.

Associate trainee membership

Open to:

  • UK and Republic of Ireland medical students for the duration of their undergraduate course, and Foundation level doctors, who have an interest in/working in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infection. 
  • In the UK, those in Core medical training/IMT/ACCS who have an interest in/working in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infection.
  • In the Republic of Ireland, those in post medical student intern year or BST who have an interest in/working in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infection.
  • In the UK, those in Locum appointment for Service and Locum appointment for Training posts in microbiology, virology or infectious diseases
  • UK and Ireland based PhD students who are studying in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infection
  • UK and Ireland based STPs  who are working/studying in the field of hospital and other healthcare-associated infection

An Associate trainee member will receive free membership.

Once Associate trainee members enter Core medical training/IMT/ACCS/BST (RoI) they may be eligible for Trainee membership at the discretion of Council, if they can demonstrate a suitable commitment to infection prevention and control.  Once registered on a recognised programme of specialty training in the field of microbiology, virology, infectious diseases or undertaking dual training, Associate trainee members are automatically eligible to move into Trainee membership.

Emeritus membership

Open to:

Any Full member on retiring from his/her professional position following 5 years of continuous membership.

Emeritus membership is FREE and members do not receive a subscription to Journal of Hospital Infection. To change your membership category to Emeritus email the membership team.

All membership applications will be at the discretion of Council.

Honorary membership

Honorary membership is awarded by Council to an individual in recognition of an outstanding and unique contribution to the Society, over and above that which might normally be delivered by holding a Society role or office, or through involvement in Society activities.

Low income country membership

Open to:

Individuals who qualify for Full or Associate membership, residing in low and lower middle income countries (as classified by the World Bank).

Free Low Income Country membership is by special application only and requires supporting documentation from the applicant and their employer. Benefits of membership are dependent upon whether the member falls into the Full or Associate membership category. Low Income Country members will only receive electronic access to the Journal of Hospital Infection.

If you reside in a qualifying country and would like to apply for Low Income Country membership, please email the membership team.  You will be asked to provide the necessary supporting documentation and then will be advised on how to submit your membership application.
