Richard Smith

Richard Smith is Chair of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, the Point of Care Foundation (which promotes compassionate, dignified care), and Patients Know Best (a company that brings all medical and social care records together in one place under the control of patients). From 2012 until 2018 he was chair of the board of trustees of  icddr,b (formerly the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh) and from 2007 to 2015 he was the director of the UnitedHealth Chronic Disease Initiative. From 2017 to 2022 he cochaired the Lancet Commission on the Value of Death. From 1979 to 2004 he worked at the BMJ and was the editor of the journal and chief executive of the BMJ Publishing Group from 1991 until 2004.

Clare Topping

Clare Topping has been the Head of Sustainability at Northampton General Hospital for 12 years.  This role encompasses almost everything; from energy and water, carbon net zero and waste to social value.  She has a PhD in Polymer Chemistry and has had a wide ranging career which has included making contact lens materials to irradiating single use items.  Her main interests lie in reducing waste in all its forms; time, physical products and money, with a particular interest in the Circular Economy and reducing single use plastics.

Jennie Wilson

Professor of Healthcare Epidemiology, University of West London

Jennie Wilson has worked in the field if infection prevention and control for 40 years, as a specialist IPC nurse in acute NHS Trusts, a consultant epidemiologist at the Public Health England and as research academic at the University of West London.  She has extensive experience of surveillance of healthcare associated infections, and is author of the textbook Infection Control in Clinical Practice.  Jennie has conducted research on a wide range of clinically focused topics including the overuse of gloves, identifying patient at risk of pneumonia, preventing catheter associated UTI, and research in care home settings on improving hydration and managing residents with dysphagia. She is currently researching the role of IPC in pandemic planning, and part of the team updating of the Epic national clinical guidelines on prevention of HCAI.

Jasmine has been nursing for over 12 years, currently working in Infection Prevention and Control at Northampton General Hospital that has a catchment of 880,000. She has worked across community and Secondary care setting and is currently conducting a study into the effects of switching to Decaffeinated hot drinks on in-patients in terms of benefits to their Continence and toilet-related Falls.

Martin Still

Senior Matron IPC, University Hospitals Sussex

Martin Still works as a Senior Matron for infection prevention and control across University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, covering acute & tertiary hospitals in Chichester, Worthing, Southlands, Brighton and Hayward’s Heath. He has been working in IPC since 2002. Martin has a BSc Hons Infection Control from Hatfield University, a PGCert Education from Brighton University and an MSc Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Martin has a keen interest in sustainability and is a part of the UHSussex sustainability network. Projects include gloves off, reducing couch roll and alternatives to disposable curtains.
