Single isolation rooms are widely recommended as a means of minimising the spread of healthcare associated infection (source isolation for patients with infections and protective isolation for those at increased risk of acquiring HCAI).

Health Building Note 04-01 supplement 1: isolation facilities for infectious patients in acute settings, describes a range of ventilation options, including systems which create a negatively pressured isolation room, positive pressure ventilated lobbies and isolation rooms which have no mechanical ventilation at all.

This session will discuss the theory behind each of these options and the reality of managing infectious patients in a real acute healthcare setting.
