Vin Poran Joined the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 2009 as a Specialist Inspector in the Microbiology and Biotechnology Unit. Prior to joining the HSE Vin worked as a clinical microbiologist in an NHS diagnostic laboratory. Now a Principal Specialist Inspector in the unit, Vin and his team are tasked with ensuring that risks to an individual’s health and safety from work with biological agents are controlled in accordance with current legislative requirements. A key part of Vin’s work is to provide technical leadership in managing HSE’s response to incidents involving biological agents with his investigative team. He provides technical advice to HSE divisions and other government departments on the workplace effects and wider impact of infectious diseases. As part of this Vin is the HSE lead for the High Level Isolation Unit at the Royal Free London and provides input into the UK’s High Consequence Infectious Disease programme.
