Launched in 2020, in celebration of the 40th anniversaries of HIS and the Journal of Hospital Infection (JHI), the HIS Early Career Award recognises outstanding innovative contributions in the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections from early career clinicians.
Nominees must be a clinician who is within 5 years of beginning a substantive Consultant post and is based in the UK or RoI by 31 January 2024.
Eligible candidates are defined as Consultant-grade healthcare professionals working in a role with a significant element of infection prevention and control, including doctors, nurses, clinical scientists, biomedical scientists and pharmacists.
Applications should clearly evidence how the nominee has applied an innovative approach to any of the following areas:
• IPC in clinical practice
• Public engagement
• Leadership or management
• Education or training
• Development of new techniques or devices
• Addressing emerging areas of need
Those engaged in a Consultant position for more than 5 years who have had a career break e.g. through family commitments, illness or other good reasons, will be also considered by HIS Council.
Nominees must be a Full member of HIS at the time of nomination. Joint applications (where nominees share an award) are not accepted.
A call for nominations will be made annually in October, and the closing date for nominations is 31 January in the year the award is made.
The winner of the HIS Early Career Award receives a medal and a prize of £1,000.
If appropriate and within scope, the awardee will be invited to submit an article to the Journal of Hospital Infection or Infection Prevention in Practice, and present their lecture at a Society event (all costs incurred would be met by HIS).
Nomination process
There are four individuals involved in the nomination process: the nominee, the nominator and two supporters. Information for the nominee: 2. Attached to the email should be: a) a short CV (two pages of A4 maximum). This should include the name(s) and year(s) of any recognition awards previously received. Included on the CV should be details of any career break taken. Please include the reason for and length of any career break. A career break is considered as any period of time where the candidate is out of work, for reasons including, but not limited to, redundancy, maternity leave, paternity leave, shared parental leave or adoption leave; extended leave to perform a carer role, and/or as a consequence of relocation. If the candidate has taken a career break for maternity leave, adoption leave or shared parental leave, eligibility for the HIS Early Career Award will be extended by 12 months per child. b) a document (one page of A4 maximum) to highlight the candidate’s contribution to IPC in their role as a Consultant. c) a list of the candidate’s recent outputs that evidence their innovative approach to their chosen area of IPC. Outputs can include, but are not limited to: other relevant awards, prizes, pedagogic publications, conference presentations, workshops, blogs, YouTube videos, TED talks, web sites etc. Information for nominators and supporters: Self-nomination (by the nominee) is not permitted. Following confirmation from the nominee that they have submitted the necessary documentation, the nominator should: 1. Submit by email PDF of a letter on institution/company headed paper nominating the candidate. This letter must summarise the candidate’s achievements and clearly describe the context in which these meet the award criteria. Nomination letters should not be longer than two pages of A4. Nomination letters must contain the following statement “I consent to the Society holding my personal data, for the purposes of managing the Society’s awards portfolio and associated review processes, for a period of one year from the date of submission and indefinitely if the nomination is successful.” 2. Attached to the email should be: a) written supporting letters from two supporters who can confirm the suitability of the candidate for the award. Letters of support should be written on institution/company headed paper and be no longer than two pages of A4.
