NICU – a 7yr experience of sinks and Pseudomonas

Guidance surrounding Pseudomonas in augmented care areas came out in 2012 following on from the Pseudomonas outbreaks in neonatal units in Northern Ireland.  In this session we will look at the impact and practical solutions tried in a neonatal unit from the neonatologists’ perspective. It is a journey over several years, addressing the reality of trying to find imperfect solutions whilst running a busy tertiary referral unit.

We will focus on issues and solutions relating to screening, water testing, remedial work by estates and ward-based IPC measures. Importantly, the consequence of babies acquiring Pseudomonas, and the impact of cases on families and staff will be addressed.
