Risks are complex things, involving probabilities, uncertainties and emotions. Yet it’s important to communicate what we know, and what we don’t know, to people who have to take important decisions around risks (both personal and policy decisions). So, how can we tackle risk communication in a way that informs people and empowers them to make their own decisions, rather than giving them a simple ‘message’ that tells them what we think they should do? The Winton Centre for Risk & Evidence Communication specialises in this kind of communication, and Alex will outline some principles based on empirical experiments that the Cambridge team and others have done on how people respond to different communications.
