Widely regarded as the ‘original superbug’, over the years MRSA has continued to evolve. Toxin producing strains and resistance to additional classes of antibiotics present further challenges. Although other superbugs have emerged, MRSA remains a significant burden and a leading cause of nosocomial infections in healthcare settings.
The papers in this MRSA Article Collection from Infection Prevention in Practice (IPIP) and the Journal of Hospital Infection (JHI), spanning four continents, highlight the persistent threat of MRSA internationally and the challenges imposed by differing resource limitations in its detection and management. They are tied together by a new editorial piece by the editorial team of IPIP, Drs. Siobhain Kelly, Gemma Winzor and Simon Ching Lam.
Ultimately, these studies emphasise the timeless message that prevention is better than cure and serve as a reminder of the crucial role we all play in safeguarding those under our care. The valuable insights and experiences shared by our colleagues further highlight the importance of continuing to invest in IPC measures, leveraging genomic technologies, and addressing global disparities in MRSA management.
