Published 27 August 2024, the latest NHS Estates Technical Bulletin (NETB No. 2024/3) introduces critical guidance on designing healthcare spaces to minimize infection risks for patients at heightened risk from nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and other waterborne pathogens. The document builds upon existing Health Technical Memoranda, HTM 04-01, which provides comprehensive advice on water safety in healthcare premises and underscores the importance of integrating infection control into the foundational design and operation of healthcare estates. 

This bulletin identifies specific measures required for new hospital premises and major refurbishments for those patients at greatest risk of healthcare-associated infections. The document highlights NHS England’s stance in aligning technical infrastructure with evolving healthcare safety needs, a critical resource for those designing healthcare facilities or managing estates and facilities.
