Legionella – pitfalls to temperature monitoring

The principal control of legionella with hot and cold water distribution systems is by temperature (keeping the hot hot, and the cold cold). Within the hot water distribution system, the standard approach of monitoring flow and return temperatures within the plantroom, together we temperatures reached at distal hot water outlets does not ensure that hot water is kept circulating throughout what can be very complex distribution systems. The problem is compounded by the proliferation of TMVs which are now installed at many outlets. Using a case study from Nottingham of a healthcare associated legionella infection, the speaker will illustrate the problems with temperature monitoring, and suggest potential solutions.
