HIS/PHE Foundation course in infection prevention and control

This four-day non-residential course, organised by HIS and Public Health England is held annually in January, is a stand-alone course, with the opportunity to learn from the leading UK experts in the field. The course will allow medical trainees, newly appointed consultants and other practitioners such as nurses and clinical scientists to gain a firm grounding in infection prevention and control. 

The learning outcomes will focus on:

  • Developing a sound approach to the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections (HCAI) and related issues of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
  • Learning how to develop a surveillance programme and gain knowledge of data collection, analysis and feedback to produce information for action
  • Outbreaks: learning about prevention and control with emphasis on investigation and data analysis
  • Learning how to use molecular typing techniques for outbreak investigation
  • Introducing technical aspects of hospital hygiene eg ventilation, disinfection and sterilisation
  • Understanding the basis of antimicrobial stewardship
  • Covering organisational aspects of HCAI prevention and control.

Approved by the Royal College of Pathologists for 24 CPD credits.

This course is only open to individuals working in a clinical setting and it is expected that attendees will already have had some experience working in an infection, prevention and control role. If you have questions on your eligibility, please contact admin@his.org.uk for clarification.

  • A deposit payment of £100 is required by credit or debit card at the time of booking to secure a place on the course.
  • An invoice will be issued for the balance of the registration fee and full payment is required at least 2 months prior to the course start date, or the place will be cancelled.
  • If, at the time of booking, the course start date is less than 2 months away, full payment will be required by credit or debit card.
Cancellation or non-attendance

Delegates wishing to cancel their booking up to 2 months before the course start date will lose their £100 deposit. Delegates wishing to transfer their place onto a future course may only do so if the booked course start date is a least 2 months away. In this case an administration fee of £50 will be charged. Cancellations or transfers will be accepted in writing by email to admin@his.org.uk up to 2 months prior to the course.

No refunds or course transfers will be permitted less than 2 months before the course start date.
